Outside of the obvious, what drew you to want to invest in helping to tell the Side Order story?
Something about it intrigued me and during our pre-Production meetings I found the story made me a bit nervous and for that reason I knew I needed to explore why. I had never been part of a movie that actually dealt with such a taboo subject. I felt the story and the experience would help to open my mind and let me be part of something that was not only a learning experience for me but others as well.
As the sound recordist for this fairly quiet, intimate portrait of love and relationship, what challenge(s) did you face in staying true to the overall vision the director had?
Well that’s easy, getting decent mic placement on talent that would be nude for most of the film shoot. It was during those intimate times that I wanted the best mic placement to capture warm yet soft and subtle dialogue. I had to get creative and I think the techniques I employed hopefully still captured the quiet yet warm intimacy of human sexuality.
Can you share a favorite moment/experience from working on the project?
The crew! Working with so many new faces was an absolute pleasure. I had been doing post sound work for over a year before this film shoot and I forgot how much fun it is to be part of a team and to collaborate with others. We had such a great time and everyone was talented, dedicated and extremely kind. Friendships and connections were made that I will always be grateful for.
So, you had to listen to Christopher perform an orgasm, what, about 20 times? Do you think he got more or less convincing with each take? What do you think is more awkward, watching a man simulate an orgasm or only hearing it without the visuals? Christopher sounded pretty consistent during each take for the most part but every take sounded convincing. I definitely think hearing it was more awkward then watching the simulation on film. In fact to me it was quite comedic to hear how men sound vs women during an orgasm. I hate to say it but if you just listen to it without watching the act it sounds like they’re trying to pull a bug thorn out of their ass or something. Sorry guys, not trying to say you’re not as sexy, lol!
